1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early literacy program offered at different libraries across the nation to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers. Designed for children from birth to age five, this program helps children develop the tools they need to become proficient readers and encourages parent and child bonding through the activity of reading together.
How it works:
- Sign up in person in the Children’s Room at the Library. Any child who has not yet started Kindergarten (or is under the age of 5) is welcome to sign up with a grown up.
- Read books together! When you sign up, we’ll give you a tracking sheet so you can keep a rough count of the number of books you read together. All kinds of books count! Reading the same book over and over again counts – repetition is an important way to build early literacy skills. Coming to story time at the Library counts!
- Come check in with us. The tracking sheet you receive will remind you to come see us every time you read 250 books (at 250, 500, 750, and 1,000). We’ll have a new book to give you at each check-in that’s yours to keep.
- Celebrate your success by joining our wall of readers in the Children’s Room when you finish.
